Broken Souls Character Companion Guide

Varin is the Sea Navigator on Thorkel Beorcolsson’s ship. He’s the father of Sigvid and the grandfather of Hallgerd, Jofrid, Griotgard, Solmund, Hosvir, and Vigdis. Varin only had one son due to the fact that his beloved wife died shortly after Sigvid was born and he never could find it in himself to remarry. Varin is training Skardi, the ward his family has taken in and treated like a son to take over his Sea Navigation duty.

Oddny is one of seven daughters of Throst, one of the ship captains and close friends of Earl Beorcol and the brothers Koll and Einar Alriksson. Therefore, it was a good match to marry Koll’s youngest son, Tyrkir. It’s also convenient that her older sister, Geirlaug, married his older brother, Saxi. The newly married couple go on to have a son named Hallgrim.

Tykir is the youngest son of Koll and the second youngest overall child. His mother is Arnora Saksisdottir, giving him his dark red hair. Growing up, he was always hanging with his older brother Gili and they’d often be seen with Earl Beorcol’s two oldest sons, Thorkel and Bothvar along with Asfrid, Arngunn, Griotgard, Solmund, Skardi, and Vog, their cousin. Tykir eventually marries Oddny Throstdottir. Her father, Throst is close friends with his father. They have a son together, Hallgrim.

Alvi is the son of Earl Hallkel and the younger brother of Earl Thorgrim. He’s the current Earl, Beorcol’s, uncle and great uncle to Thorkel, Bothvar, Thormar, Svala, and Bodvar.

Alvi was once a husband and father himself, but unfortunately, his wife and children died. Now he raises a ward named Gudrod.

Being the only child of Hallberta, Jofrid, and Gilli, she got more attention than she may have wanted growing up. They lived with their Grandfather, Koll, in his large house. She had to share a room with her cousins, Aldis, Estrid, Asvor, and Bolla. The room can be a bit crowded and fights have happened between the girls, however, they’re all fiercely loyal and close to one another. Of course, war has occurred between them and their male cousins, Gudrik and Starolf, but they are all family at the end of the day.

Jofrid Sigviddottir is the second child of Sigvid Varinsson and Hedinfrid Jomarsdottir. Their mother died giving birth to the youngest child of Sigvid, Vigdis, her younger sister. Aside from her older sister Hallgerd, who just so happened to have married Svafar, her husband’s older brother, she has four younger siblings including Vigdis. Griotgard, Solmund, and Hosvir are her younger brothers. Aside from her siblings, her father took in a young boy that was around Solmund’s age named Skardi who was an orphan her father found.

Her family all lived within the long house her ancestors built with her grandfather, Varin, until she moved in with her husband, Gili, and her sister-wife and long-time childhood friend, Hallberta Thorstardottir. Hallberta became pregnant with their daughter, Hilde. Even though Hilde didn’t come from her own womb, she has always considered her as her own daughter. Hallberta, of course, made sure to make her feel included in raising Hilde.

Hallberta Thorstardottir is the daughter of Thorstar Ulfbjornsson and younger sister to Arnbjorg Thorstardottir. She never thought she’d have to share a man with another woman, but she knew she’d marry Gili. Especially after her sister, Arnbjorg went on to marry his older brother Saxi. Not to mention that Arnbjorg shared Saxi with another woman. She thought she couldn’t do that until she saw that Gili didn’t just have eyes for her but also for her close friend Jofrid Sigviddottir. Originally, she was jealous and the two close friends quickly became rivals. However, neither was willing to budge and eventually the two women came to an agreement. They decided to share Gili. Before they knew it, they were all wedded and eventually Hallberta became pregnant and eventually gave birth to Hilde, their daughter.

Even though Hilde was her own daughter, she made sure her sister-wife and close friend Jofrid also felt like her mother. They worked together to raise Hilde the best way possible, sharing the responsibilities and duties of motherhood and it strengthened the bond between them and their husband Gilli.

Gili Kollson is the second youngest son of Koll. His mother by birth is Svanhild Alriksson. Of course, Gili was more of a wild child and was caught sleeping around two different women, Hallberta Thorstardottir and Jofrid Sigviddottir. At first, neither woman was willing to let go of Gili even though both weren’t happy about finding out that he was seeing them both. Eventually, both agreed to share him and Gili ended up marrying them both. Being the son of the wealthiest man, aside from the Earl, most women are willing to share in order to marry a wealthy man such as Gili. However, Gili was fortunate to find two women who found a way to make it work without killing him or each other. Jofrid and Hallberta were also two very kind and compassionate women. Eventually, the triage go on to have a daughter named Hilde, who was born from Hallberta.

Like most children of Koll, Asgerd works on her father’s ship, raiding during the summers. In the fall, she shares a room with her sister Asfrid. The two are complete opposites of each other. Asgerd is hot, while Asfrid is cold. They don’t even share the same birthing mother. While Asfrid was born from Ingithora, Asgerd was Arnora’s daughter. However, the two are inseparable even though they always seem to argue.
